Sometimes factory replacement isn’t enough. If you’re installing a modern, fuel injected engine (or otherwise need more circuits than your original harness can provide) in your vintage muscle car, Classic Update kits are the way to go. They are the most complete vehicle-specific restomod harnesses available.

All Classic Update kits provide a modern ATO fuse box, along with all of the vehicle-specific items you’ll need to rewire your car from headlight to taillight. The purchase is a no-brainer for someone installing a modern powertrain in order to attack an autocross course, but is something to consider for a casual weekend cruiser.

If you’re on the fence, there are a few key factors that can help determine if a Classic Update is the right choice:

Fuse box – Want to keep your fuse panel original? As mentioned, all Classic Update kits come with an ATO- style fuse box attached to the dash harness. Typically, Classic Update kits will mount in (or very near) the original factory location. If you wish to relocate the fuse panel, or eliminate a bulkhead pass through, something like our Highway 22 or Highway 15 may be an alternative.

Price – Classic Update kits are less expensive than an original-replacement Factory Fit harness. This is because you’ll do more of the final assembly. Sometimes this is perfect for a build, but others it’s not really necessary. If you have no need for more room in your engine bay and under dash harnesses, you’ll find Factory Fit parts are a quicker install because they are pre-built for you by AAW. Simply put, a smaller price tag can be appealing, but it’s not always the way to go with wiring!

Ammeter – Do you have an unhealthy attachment to your original battery gauge? You’ll always have the option to have your ammeter retooled to function as a voltmeter, but you won’t find support for an original (or aftermarket) ammeter in any of our Classic Update kits. This is primarily a safety concern, as ammeters are typically unfused, and are not designed to cope with modern charging systems. And speaking of charging….

Alternator – Now is the time to ditch that external regulator. We’ll happily support an original external voltage regulator with our Factory Fit harnesses, but our Update kits are designed for vehicles equipped with modern equipment and a more intense electrical demand.

If you’re still not sure the Classic Update is right for your car, please don’t hesitate to give our sales team a call. We’re always more than happy to provide a little guidance!
